Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' receives 'R' rating ahead of July 17 release

Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated epic ‘The Odyssey’ has officially received an ‘R’ rating from the Motion Picture Association.According to the latest reports, the rating would technically require viewers under the age of 17 to be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian to attend screenings in the United States. As per Variety, this rating will potentially limit the audience for what is expected to be one of the biggest films of 2026.

‘The Odyssey’ gets R-rating

The rating places ‘The Odyssey’ among the few recent blockbuster releases that will be aiming for the USD 1 billion mark, despite the ‘adult’ certification. However, this is not the first Nolan to receive this rating. His Oscar-winning film ‘Oppenheimer’ also earned the USD 1 billion mark at the box office, despite its R-rated certification. The film also went on to become one of the most successful R-rated films in cinematic history. While the specific reasons for the certification is still unknown, however, the mythological film is expected to feature some large-scale battles and intense violence.

Fans view ‘The Odyssey’ in different formats

As the film’s release draws closer, the makers on Friday, expanded its promotional campaign by allowing users to compare how footage from the film appears across various formats. The tool showcases differences between IMAX 70mm, IMAX digital, traditional 35mm presentations and Dolby Vision screenings. The feature has generated considerable discussion among moviegoers online, particularly among fans eager to experience Nolan’s preferred IMAX 70mm presentation.

‘The Odyssey’ budget

Universal Pictures, which previously partnered with Nolan on ‘Oppenheimer’, is distributing the film that reportedly carries a production budget of approximately USD 250 million. If accurate, this budget would place the film among the most expensive R-rated productions of all time, surpassing even recent releases such as ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ and ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’.

‘The Odyssey’ plot

Based on Homer’s epic poem, ‘The Odyssey’ follows Greek king Odysseus on his journey home to Ithaca following the Trojan War, encountering mythical creatures, vengeful gods and countless dangers along the way.

‘The Odyssey’ cast and release date

The film, scheduled for release on July 17, 2026, boasts an all-star ensemble led by Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Jon Bernthal.
