Four Virginia officers received valor awards for rescuing an unconscious man from a burning house despite dangerous conditions.

When smoke fills a room and flames begin to spread, every second can mean the difference between life and death. In Culpeper, Virginia, four police officers faced that reality on October 3, crawling through a smoke-choked house to find a resident who had failed to escape the fire. Their search led them into a burning bedroom, where an unconscious man lay waiting to be rescued, states an online report by Fox News. The officers brought him out alive, but the rescue came at a cost, with three of them requiring hospital treatment. Scroll down to read the details of the accident.

A desperate search inside the house

According to Fox News, the emergency unfolded that evening when officers arrived at a wooden house in Culpeper to find thick smoke pouring from its windows. Residents living in separate apartments had already made it outside, but they feared one man might still be trapped inside.Officer Ashley Sain entered the building without protective gear and began checking rooms. Officer Neal Coffey soon joined her, and the two made their way upstairs, where smoke was escaping through the gaps around a locked bedroom door.Coffey used a small tool to open the lock. As the officers called out to check whether anyone was inside, they received no response. Beyond the doorway, flames were visible through dense, black smoke. By then, Sgt. David Cole and Officer Michael Beel had also reached the second floor, adds another report by CBS Evening News.

Crawling through smoke and flames

According to CBS Evening News, body-camera footage captured the officers’ increasingly difficult search as visibility inside the bedroom deteriorated. Coffey crawled across the wooden floor with a flashlight, struggling to see through the smoke. Unable to move safely while standing, he lowered himself further and felt his way through the room.He eventually found a man lying unresponsive on a bed. The resident was breathing but could not get himself to safety, also adds the report.Coffey tried to move him towards the doorway, calling for assistance as the rescue became more difficult. Beel crawled into the room to help, while Sain and Cole joined the effort.Working together, the four officers pulled the unconscious man onto the floor and dragged him into the hallway. Firefighters soon reached them, and a team carried the resident out of the burning building before extinguishing the fire, explains Fox News report. The man was taken to a hospital and subsequently transferred to a regional burn centre. Authorities have not released his identity or the cause of the fire, citing an active investigation, adds the report.

Bravery recognised after the rescue

The incident left its mark on the rescuers, too. Three of the four officers received hospital treatment for smoke inhalation and other injuries before being released later that evening. On October 14, all four officers were presented with valor awards in recognition of their actions, according to the Culpeper Police Department, adds Fox News report. The rescue highlighted the risks officers can face when responding to emergencies that fall outside their usual duties. With a resident believed to be trapped inside and little time to spare, the four continued searching despite the dangerous conditions.Images Courtesy: istock and Facebook Fox News
