‘Bethlehem Kudumba Unit’ director Girish A.D. has expressed his desire to make a film with Malayalam cinema icons Mammootty and Mohanlal. However, the filmmaker said he would take up such a project only if he finds a story that suits both actors. Girish A.D. opened up about the possibility in an interview with The Indian Express Malayalam.The director considers a film featuring the two veteran stars a major responsibility. He also acknowledged the pressure that would come with bringing them together on screen. According to Girish A.D. the expectations surrounding a project with Mammootty and Mohanlal would be significantly higher.The filmmaker said in a recent interview that he has not been approached for such a project so far. He added that there is no barrier to having a discussion if he comes up with suitable material. He currently does not have a story that he believes is right for the two actors.
Girish A.D. wants to work with Mammootty and Mohanlal
Girish A.D. made it clear that he would like to direct both Mammootty and Mohanlal. The filmmaker, however, does not want to approach the project simply because of the stature of the actors.He believes the story should come first. A strong screenplay would also be necessary before he considers making a film with the two stars. Girish A.D. said that he remains open to discussions if he eventually finds the right material.“I am interested in making a film with Mohanlal and Mammootty. No one has approached me so far. There is a situation where, if I have the material, we can discuss it or call each other whenever we want. But no stories suitable for that have come to my mind,” Girish A.D. said.
Filmmaker sees the project as a major responsibility
For Girish A.D., the challenge is not simply bringing two celebrated actors together. He feels responsible for ensuring that the film does justice to their presence and reputation.Mammootty and Mohanlal have each built decades-long careers in Malayalam cinema. Both actors have also taken on a wide variety of characters across different genres. A project featuring them would naturally attract considerable attention from audiences.Girish A.D. said he is conscious of the expectations attached to such a film. He therefore wants to be careful before attempting it.
‘He came and ruined it’
The filmmaker also spoke about his biggest concern. He does not want the film to create a situation where viewers blame him for affecting the image or careers of the two actors.“I see it as a huge responsibility because if I bring them into a film and something goes wrong with it, people will say, ‘He came and ruined it.’ If people say that I tried to bring those who were doing perfectly well into my zone and messed things up, it would become a major problem for us,” Girish A.D. said.He added that this is why he would approach such a collaboration with considerable caution. For Girish A.D., finding the right story is therefore crucial.
Girish A.D. wants the right story first
The director’s comments suggest that there is no immediate project involving Mammootty and Mohanlal. He has not ruled out the possibility either.Girish A.D. said discussions could happen whenever the right material is available. For now, however, he is yet to find a story that makes him confident about bringing the two actors together.“That is why I can only make a film with them very carefully,” Girish A.D. said. His approach comes at a time when the filmmaker is enjoying attention for his latest release ‘BKU’ with Nivin Pauly and ‘Jana Nayagan’ actor Mamitha Baiju.
