What if the disposable diaper changed a baby’s day, and then went on to help build the road outside your home? An unusual recycling experiment in Wales has transformed thousands of used diapers into an unexpected ingredient for road construction, offering a glimpse into how everyday waste could become a valuable resource. Carmarthenshire County Council’s official website says that in the past, they teamed up with local recycling company Nappicycle on a trial project aimed at solving two problems at once: the growing amount of nappy waste and the effect of traditional road maintenance on the environment. The first trial, on the B4336 at Pontweli in March 2024, took around four tons of used diapers—the equivalent of some 80,000 diapers—out of landfill. The project was particularly significant considering that, in 2023 alone, Carmarthenshire collected around 6 million diapers, underlining the size of the waste stream and the opportunity to seek new applications for it.
How road material is made from used diapers
According to the report, the process started with the council collecting the waste diapers. The materials were then taken to Nappicycle’s recycling facility in Capel Hendre where they were processed and turned into fibrous pellets. The recycled fibers were then taken to the contractor GD Harries’ plant in Ludchurch. Before being laid onto the road, they were mixed with a road-surfacing material, called Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA). The council said that the recycled nappy fibers were as effective as conventional materials and the trial cost had no additional material.
A local circular economy
The project is a brilliant example of the circular economy in action; used diapers are not treated as waste to be sent to landfill, but are instead recovered for their materials and given a new lease of life. The approach could help cut waste and promote more sustainable highway maintenance by using recycled material in place of some virgin resources. Reducing the carbon footprint of waste disposal may also be a benefit of keeping diapers out of landfill. And since the recycling and subsequent manufacturing is done locally, the initiative can also reduce the transportation and processing that comes with sourcing and disposing of materials.
Could diapers shape the future?
For Carmarthenshire the road trial is but a beginning. If successful, the council says it will consider expanding the initiative, potentially turning an everyday waste problem into a long-term infrastructure solution. Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Decarbonization and Sustainability, Councilor Aled Vaughan Owen, said the project was an example of responsibility and innovation when it came to the environment, showing how used diapers can have a useful second life rather than being dumped in landfill.Images Courtesy: istock
