The West Bengal government has revised its Bakrid holiday schedule and announced May 28, 2026, as the official public holiday for Eid al-Adha across the state. The decision was taken after updated information confirmed that the festival would now be observed on May 28 instead of the dates announced earlier.A fresh notification issued by the state government stated that the earlier holidays declared for May 26 and May 27 have been withdrawn. Both days will now function as regular working days for offices, institutions, and establishments covered under the government notification.
Fresh notification issued after revised festival date
The state administration said the earlier order, issued in November 2025, had declared May 26 as a holiday for the day before Id-Ud-Zoha and May 27 for Bakrid celebrations. However, the revised moon-sighting update changed the expected festival date, prompting the government to alter the holiday calendar.In the latest order, the Governor approved May 28, which falls on a Thursday, as a public holiday under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, on account of Id-Ud-Zoha (Bakrid).The government said the modification was necessary to ensure that the official holiday coincides with the actual day of religious observance.
Earlier holidays cancelled
The notification clearly stated that the holidays announced earlier for May 26 and May 27 stand cancelled. As a result, government departments, educational institutions, and other notified establishments will remain operational on both days.The revised announcement is expected to impact administrative schedules across departments, especially in schools, public offices, and institutions that had already prepared for the earlier holiday dates.Officials said updated instructions would be communicated to all concerned departments to avoid confusion among employees and the public.
Organizations to announce changes in schedule
In light of this revision, some organizations are bound to issue announcements in relation to their new schedule regarding examinations, attendance, and other work-related matters. Other financial establishments following the state holiday list might also do the same.This clarification will assist organizations to understand that there will only be one official holiday to mark this important festival.With the issuance of this revised holiday list, May 28 shall be declared the lone official holiday for Bakrid in West Bengal in the year 2026.
